How CHANCE Piles Are Made:
CHANCE Screw Pile Foundations
Ground Sun has over 25 years experience in all types of piling and groundworks. Screw piling is the cleanest, quickest and least intrusive foundation system on the market. Our screw pile system is the only LABC approved screw piling system in the UK. Most screw piles are made of hollow shafts leading to troublesome installations however our piles are solid steel in construction made from the finest American high tensile steel for your peace of mind. Our innovative screw piles are installed with a grout column around the shaft for increased bearing capacity (skin friction) meaning fewer piles on your installation and ultimate protection in all soil conditions.
No Deep Trenches Required
Excavating deep trenches in the ground can be a risky and time-consuming job unless you use pile foundations. For example, if you have trees within 10 metres of your property and the ground conditions are clay, you should consider screw based foundations as your engineer and building control are likely to require you to dig between 2.5 to 3 meters deep for traditional foundations.
One of the many advantages of our pile rigs is they can operate in restricted access and be carried through a standard door opening and used as a hand-held rig, or be mounted on a small excavator.
Ground Sun Installations
Ground Sun is the distributor and a certified installer of the Chance® Helical Pier Foundation System. Since 1912, Chance has been the international leader in earth anchoring. Their helical piles are used worldwide to secure residential and commercial buildings, tower foundations, heavy equipment foundations and many other deep foundation applications.
The Helical Pulldown Micropile® is a system for constructing a grout column around the shaft of a standard Helical Pier foundation system pile. Meaning our screw piles guarantee that your building/structure is anchored on a solid base with fewer piles needed.

How Our Foundations Are Installed
A hydraulic drive drill rig is used to install the screw pile into the ground. Additional displacement plates and extension shafts are bolted onto the shaft and the helical screw piles are pulled downwards. Torque is applied until the necessary load capacity has been achieved. A flowable grout fills the void, surrounding and encapsulating the screw pile shaft. The helical screw pile shaft is then cut off and new construction screw pile plate is attached ready for ring beams to be installed.
Benefits of Helical Piles
Due to the nature of helical piles, and the fact that they are quick to install, they make for an inexpensive solution to potentially pricey projects. What’s more, as they are specifically designed to be used within grounds where there may be varying application requirements (such as various lengths and thicknesses) they are a highly versatile option which is utilized across a plethora of industries, including building, transport and communications.
The screw pile method of construction offers the following advantages:
No excavation spoils to remove
Can be installed in any weather
Permits building on weak soil sites
No heavy equipment required
Installs in limited access situations
May be installed close to underground services/trees
Can be used to underpin foundations
High capacity applications

Will Helical foundation Piles be suitable for your project?
Helical screw Piles are suitable for use within a wide range of projects, specifically meeting the needs of projects where:
There is a need for raked, at angles of up to 45°
Where they need to be either underground or above ground
There is any form of soil
There is a need to support structures through compression and tension
Where there may be low temperatures
In demanding projects that are subject to unusual circumstances

Why Use Our Service?
Lots of engineers around the country have a common question they want answered; “what are the benefits of using our foundations or helical anchors as they are otherwise known as” This is a great question to ask and hopefully with this guide, Ground Sun can provide the answer.
These steel shafts with a series of helical plates are used for a wide range of applications in various sectors. They are very inexpensive and they are very easy to install. Available in a range of sizes and dimensions they are screwed straight into the ground making them the ideal choice for concrete foundations.
Low level of noise produced
No concrete is necessary – again reducing time and costs
A cost-effective method
The potential benefits including green ones are detailed below:
Ease of Installation of Screw Piles
A conventional piece of equipment such as the mini excavator or the track excavator is used to install these pile foundations.
Use a low-speed high-torque hydraulic motor at an appropriate speed and this is an inexpensive and fast way to mobilize.
There is no need to use a crane or a large drilled shaft rig.
All that is typically needed is one labourer and one operator.
Helical Piles can be Loaded Immediately
This option is unique in that they can be loaded straight after installation. There is no need to wait for grout to harden. This is fantastic on some projects such as emergency response where the construction schedule is extremely short and the remainder of the project relies on the readiness of the pile foundations.
They Cause Minimal Disturbance
Helical anchors typically produce no soil cuttings this means after each installation there is a low level of site clean needed and this can only mean a decrease in project costs. In addition to this, there is a low level of noise associated with this. Some sites can be noisy but this is not the case with screw pile foundations.
As there are no soil cuttings, any contaminated soils do not need to be touched. A welcome advantage for the environment.
Pile and Beam Foundations
The use of helical pile and beam foundations is a very effective manner of constructing your building with no disturbance to nearby tree roots and retained trees onsite. CHANCE helical screw piles are the ultimate tree friendly eco foundation as there is no vibration no removal of soil (as it is not a CFA pile), minimal concrete used, no cutting or damaging of existing tree roots and the piles can be placed in between existing tree roots as seen below. As the helical pile supports the ring beam foundation from a depth of ~5m below the ground your building and the existing trees can live side by side. We work with a number of arborologists to ensure that the CHANCE helical pile and beam foundation solution is correctly designed and installed for the ultimate tree preservation. As tree roots generally lie between 0.6 to 1m below ground level with some roots exposed on the surface we can carry out our helical pile installations using a restricted access handheld rig carried through a doorway. The CHANCE helical screw pile is not a CFA Auger pile or short bored pile foundation with no requirement for troublesome pile mats onsite, this means the installation of each pile takes as little as 30minutes for buildings near tree roots and with a new construction bracket placed on top of the helical pile the foundation is instantly ready for ring beam foundations.
They offer Ease of Access to Remote Sites
Screw/ helical anchors are most suited for projects that are located in a remote area where any mobilisation costs would be particularly high and support services are low in supply. Unfortunately, with some project sites, congestion causes issues with engineers and any projects that involve performing with limited head space also adds to any concern. As these foundations are fabricated consisting of extensions and lead sections they are perfect for any situations where low or limited access is needed.
Helical Piles and Mini Screw Piles - Ideal for High Ground
These foundations typically do not need an excavation when installing. If however they are being used to underpin an existing structure a shallow one is used to expose existing foundations. The use of these piles will help eliminate the need for any pumps and will also reduce costs.
Screw Piling Contractors can Install Foundations at all Angles
Typically they are installed vertically but in fact, they can be installed at any angle to suit the requirements of the project. Installing on a batter will provide additional resistance if needed. It is that simple.
Helical Piles are very versatile
A unique feature of our piles is their ability to increase the load capacity by modifying the configuration of screw/helical elements.
As mentioned earlier in the guide there are green benefits of using this option. Screw piles have been put in place to remain for a few years before being removed and used someone else. The high-quality steel used to conserves energy and provides an overall reduction in the carbon footprint. It is therefore not surprising why this is the number one choice for many engineers.
As you can see there are plenty of benefits these sort of foundations are the way forward. In the current economic climate businesses including engineers are looking for ways to reduce costs and this option is the answer they have been waiting for.
